Artist Bio/Statement

Currently I find myself analyzing my mental state and emotion as a Black mother in the current social environment. In these divided times we, Black mothers, are trying to protect our children from harm. Our try’s don’t always succeed and the permanency of our failure haunts all of us. Just as coffee or tea stains the white of the paper, the residue of another lost life is a stain on our psyche. 

The charcoal marks are determined but can be rubbed out. However, there will always be a shadow there, no matter how hard you try to remove it. It will leave its mark regardless. The marks range from resolute placements meant to depict an idea to a frenzied attack on paper, representing the lack of stability and unsettledness. The environment is full of anger and pain, but it is with love the black body is rendered. The environment is empty without it realistically drawn in an abstract environment to communicate the feeling of not having a concrete existence. My figures flow in and out of the abstractness, we are here. 

It is a view into a world that not everyone is privy to. A soul laid bare showing love and care, anxiety, and pain Black mothers feel. Raw and unapologetic.
